Kathy Hochul’s Top Deputy Wants To Primary Her In New York

Antonio Delgado, the top deputy of New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, has announced his candidacy for the 2026 New York governor’s race, setting the stage for a potentially historic primary battle between the two Democratic heavyweights.

Delgado, who has served as Hochul’s chief of staff since 2015, made the announcement on Tuesday at a press conference in Albany, surrounded by supporters and members of the media. In his speech, Delgado highlighted his experience working alongside Hochul and his vision for the future of New York.

“I am proud to announce my candidacy for the 2026 New York governor’s race,” Delgado declared. “I have had the privilege of working closely with Lieutenant Governor Hochul for the past six years, and I have seen firsthand her dedication to the people of New York. I am ready to continue her legacy and lead this state into a brighter future.”

Delgado, a native of the Bronx, has an impressive resume that includes serving as a White House Fellow under the Obama administration and working as a senior advisor to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. He has also been a vocal advocate for issues such as criminal justice reform, affordable housing, and education.

In his speech, Delgado emphasized his commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing New York, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, and social justice.

“As we continue to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, we must also focus on rebuilding our economy and creating opportunities for all New Yorkers,” Delgado stated. “We must also address the systemic inequalities that have plagued our state for far too long. As governor, I will work tirelessly to ensure that every New Yorker has access to quality education, affordable healthcare, and a fair criminal justice system.”

Delgado’s decision to challenge his boss in the primary race has raised eyebrows, but he insists that it is not a personal attack on Hochul. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity to offer a fresh perspective and bring new ideas to the table.

“I have the utmost respect for Lieutenant Governor Hochul, and I believe that our state is lucky to have her as a leader,” Delgado said. “But I also believe that it is time for a new generation of leadership in New York. I am ready to bring my experience, passion, and vision to the governor’s office.”

Hochul, who has been lieutenant governor since 2015 and previously served in Congress, has not yet announced her plans for the 2026 gubernatorial race. However, political analysts predict that she will seek the Democratic nomination for governor.

If both Hochul and Delgado make it to the primary, it will be a historic moment for New York as it will be the first time that two high-profile Democrats will face off in a primary for the state’s top office. It will also be a test of the party’s unity and strength as they work towards maintaining their hold on the governorship.

Delgado’s announcement has already garnered support from some prominent Democrats, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. He has also received endorsements from various grassroots organizations and community leaders.

“Antonio Delgado is a dynamic and dedicated leader who has proven his commitment to serving the people of New York,” Mayor de Blasio stated. “I have no doubt that he will make an exceptional governor and continue to move our state forward.”

As the race for the 2026 New York governor’s race heats up, one thing is certain – the Democratic Party will have a tough decision to make. But with candidates like Antonio Delgado and Kathy Hochul, it is clear that New York is in good hands, no matter who ultimately wins the primary.
