Portiuncula altar stone arrives in Southern Arabia as St. Francis jubilee begins

in Middle East

For centuries, the small town of Assisi in Italy has been a sacred pilgrimage site for Catholics, drawing millions of devout followers each year. And within the walls of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi lies a small but powerful relic – a stone from the Portiuncula, a humble chapel that holds great significance for the Catholic faithful. But what makes this stone even more special is its journey to the Arabian Gulf, where it has become a symbol of unity and communion for Catholics in the region.

The Portiuncula, which means “little portion” in Italian, was originally a small chapel built in the 4th century by St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. It was here that St. Francis received his calling from God and founded the Franciscan Order, which focused on simplicity, humility, and service to the poor. The Portiuncula also holds special significance for Catholics as it was here that St. Francis asked for and received forgiveness for his sins.

Over the years, the Portiuncula chapel fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. However, in the 16th century, it was restored and became part of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels, a large church that was built around the tiny chapel. Today, the Portiuncula is a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics, who come to pray and seek forgiveness at the place where St. Francis received his calling.

But what many do not know is that a small stone from the Portiuncula has made its way to the Arabian Gulf and has become a source of strength and connection for Catholics living in the region. The stone was brought to the United Arab Emirates by Fr. Reinhold Sahner, a German Capuchin priest who has been serving in the Gulf for over three decades. He was gifted the stone by the Franciscans in Assisi in 1997, and it has since traveled with him to various Catholic communities in the region.

For Catholics living in the Gulf, the stone serves as a tangible reminder of their connection to the universal Church and their faith. It is placed in a small wooden reliquary and is often displayed during Mass or special occasions, such as feast days or holy days. Its presence brings a sense of comfort and unity to the community, as they hold onto a piece of their spiritual home in Assisi.

The stone has also become a symbol of communion among Catholics in the Gulf. As Fr. Sahner explains, “It’s a source of unity because it has a history in Assisi, and it connects us to all other Catholics around the world who have a devotion to St. Francis.” This sense of connection and belonging is especially important for Catholics living in a predominantly Muslim region, where they may face challenges in practicing their faith.

But the significance of the stone goes beyond just the Catholic community. It has also been a source of bridge-building and understanding among different faiths. Fr. Sahner shares that the stone has been taken to interfaith events, where it has been received with respect and curiosity by people of other religions. It has also been used in interfaith prayers, where it serves as a symbol of peace and unity.

The stone from the Portiuncula has truly become a symbol of communion and unity in the Gulf, bringing together Catholics of different nationalities and backgrounds, as well as serving as a bridge to foster greater understanding and respect between different faiths. Its journey from the humble chapel in Assisi to the Arabian Gulf is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the unifying force of God’s love. And for the Catholic community in the Gulf, the stone will continue to be a precious and cherished possession, serving as a constant reminder of their connection to the universal Church and their faith in God.
