Uganda army confirms arrest of priest over alleged state security threats

Father Deusdedit Ssekabira, a priest serving the Catholic Diocese of Masaka in Uganda, has been in the news recently after his sudden disappearance on December 3, 2025. The news of his abduction from his office in Katwe, Masaka city, by men wearing Uganda Army uniform has sparked concern and prayers from the bishop and the entire Catholic community.

However, the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance has been put to rest after the confirmation by Uganda’s defense authorities that Father Ssekabira is in their custody. According to the acting director of defense public information, Col. Chris Magezi, the priest is being held for alleged “violent subversive activities against the state.” He further stated that Ssekabira is in lawful custody and will be produced in court to face charges.

The confirmation of the priest’s detainment has brought a sense of relief to the Catholic community, who have been praying for his safe return. Bishop Serverus Jjumba of the Masaka Diocese had directed special prayers, including a rosary triduum, for the priest’s safe return. He also called on the people of God to pray for the Church and the nation during this difficult time.

The bishop’s efforts to locate the missing priest had been unsuccessful, and he had expressed his concern over the incident, which he described as a “grievous wound inflicted on Masaka Diocese, the entire Catholic Church, and Father Ssekabira’s family.” He also mentioned that the diocese, along with their lawyers, was doing everything in their power to secure the priest’s safe return.

As the case moves towards the courts, attention will now focus on due process, the specific charges against Father Ssekabira, and the implications of the case for Church-state relations in Uganda. The Catholic community is hopeful that justice will prevail, and the truth will be revealed.

Father Ssekabira’s arrest has raised questions about the state of religious freedom in Uganda. The country has a history of religious persecution, and this incident has only added to the concerns of the Catholic community. However, the Church remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting peace and harmony in the country.

The Catholic Church in Uganda has been at the forefront of providing education, healthcare, and social services to the people, regardless of their religious beliefs. The Church has also been actively involved in promoting dialogue and reconciliation in the country, especially during times of political unrest.

Father Ssekabira’s case is a reminder of the sacrifices made by the clergy in their service to the Church and the community. They work tirelessly to spread the message of love, compassion, and forgiveness, and their efforts should be appreciated and respected.

The Catholic Diocese of Masaka is grateful for the support and prayers from the Catholic community and other well-wishers during this difficult time. They remain hopeful that Father Ssekabira will be released soon and will continue to serve the Church and the people with the same dedication and commitment as before.

In conclusion, let us continue to pray for Father Ssekabira’s safe return and for the Church and the nation of Uganda. May this incident serve as a reminder of the importance of religious freedom and the need for mutual respect and understanding among all people, regardless of their beliefs. Let us also remember the sacrifices made by the clergy in their service to the Church and the community, and support them in their efforts to promote peace and harmony in our society.
