In order to survive, we need to reimagine its purpose and understand that education systems do not operate outside of society or in a vacuum, but rather, they reflect wider dominant socio-economic approaches and discourses.

The first and perhaps most pressing issue facing higher education in the UK is the increasing commodification of education. In recent years, there has been a shift towards viewing education as a product rather than a public good. This requires a shift in the dominant discourse surrounding education, from viewing it as a means to economic success to viewing it as a tool for personal and societal growth.

Moreover, the commodification of education must be addressed. The government must take responsibility for funding higher education and ensure that it remains accessible to all, regardless of their socio-economic background. This would also alleviate the pressure on universities to compete for funding and allow them to focus on providing quality education rather than generating profit.

In terms of diversity and inclusivity, universities must actively work towards creating a more inclusive environment. This includes increasing representation of underrepresented groups in staff and faculty, implementing diversity and inclusion training for all staff, and providing support and resources for students from diverse backgrounds.

Additionally, the focus on academic achievement must be balanced with practical skills and vocational training. This would not only prepare students for the job market but also provide them with a well-rounded education that includes both theoretical and practical knowledge.

Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of investing in technology and resources for online learning. Universities must continue to prioritize these investments to ensure that all students have equal access to education, regardless of their circumstances.

In conclusion, higher education in the UK is facing a crisis, but it is not too late to reimagine its purpose and ensure its survival. We must understand that education systems do not exist in a vacuum, but rather, they are shaped by wider societal discourses and approaches. By addressing the challenges facing higher education and redefining its purpose, we can create a more equitable and inclusive system that truly benefits individuals and society as a whole.
