One particular topic that has been gaining traction among my colleagues is the value of the dissertation as a rite of passage for students. Traditionally, the dissertation has been seen as the pinnacle of academic achievement, a symbol of a student’s mastery of their subject and their readiness to enter the professional world. However, with the changing times and the emergence of new forms of research and communication, the question arises – is the dissertation still considered a rite of passage?

Before we delve into this question, let us first understand what a dissertation is. A dissertation is a lengthy and in-depth research project that students undertake as a requirement for their degree. It involves conducting original research, analyzing data, and presenting findings in a structured and coherent manner. It is a challenging and time-consuming task, often taking months or even years to complete. The dissertation is a significant component of a student’s academic journey, and its completion is seen as a milestone in their academic career.

For decades, the dissertation has been the standard method of assessment for higher education degrees. While it is true that the dissertation may not be the only form of assessment in today’s world, it still holds immense value. It is a testament to a student’s dedication, hard work, and perseverance. It also provides them with a platform to showcase their research skills and contribute to the existing body of knowledge in their field. Furthermore, the dissertation is a valuable learning experience that prepares students for the challenges they may face in their future careers.

In conclusion, the dissertation may have its limitations, but it is still an essential component of higher education. It is a rite of passage that marks the transition from a student to a scholar. As educators, it is our responsibility to adapt to the changing times and find ways to make the dissertation more relevant and meaningful for our students.
