Hyundai Motor Group Design Leaders Honored with Automotive News Centennial Awards

Hyundai Motor Group has long been a leader in the automotive industry, known for its innovative designs and cutting-edge technology. And at the helm of this successful company are three key figures who have been instrumental in shaping its success: President, Chief Design Officer, and Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke, former President and Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, and current Head of Design SangYup Lee.

Luc Donckerwolke, a Belgian national, joined Hyundai Motor Group in 2015, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous roles at prestigious car companies such as Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley. With over 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, Donckerwolke has been a driving force behind the company’s bold and dynamic design language, which has helped to elevate the Hyundai brand to new heights.

As President, Donckerwolke oversees all aspects of Hyundai’s design, including the development of new models and the creation of concept cars that showcase the brand’s future direction. His keen eye for detail and his passion for creating visually striking designs have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and peers in the industry.

In addition to his role as President, Donckerwolke also serves as the Chief Design Officer and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group. This means that he not only oversees the design of Hyundai vehicles but also those of its sister companies, including Kia and Genesis. This multi-faceted role allows Donckerwolke to bring a cohesive and unified design philosophy to all the brands under the Hyundai umbrella, ensuring that each vehicle maintains its unique identity while still reflecting the overall vision of the company.

One of Donckerwolke’s most notable achievements at Hyundai Motor Group has been the creation of the brand’s signature design language, known as “Sensuous Sportiness”. This design philosophy is characterized by a harmonious blend of elegance and athleticism, resulting in cars that are not only visually appealing but also exude a sense of dynamism and confidence. This approach has been applied to all of Hyundai’s recent models, including the popular Sonata and the newly launched Santa Cruz pickup truck.

But Donckerwolke is not the only one responsible for the success of Hyundai’s design language. He has been working closely with former President and Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, who is widely credited for transforming the Hyundai brand and elevating its design to a whole new level. Schreyer, a German national, joined Hyundai in 2006 and has since been a key figure in the company’s rise to become a global powerhouse in the automotive industry.

Schreyer’s influence can be seen in the brand’s iconic “Cascading Grille”, which has become a signature element of Hyundai’s design language. He also played a crucial role in the development of the brand’s “Fluidic Sculpture” design philosophy, which was first introduced in the 2010 Sonata and has since been applied to all Hyundai models. This approach is characterized by flowing lines and sculpted surfaces, giving Hyundai vehicles a distinct and eye-catching look.

Despite stepping down from his role as President and Chief Design Officer in 2018, Schreyer remains a key member of the Hyundai design team, serving as the company’s Head of Design Management. In this role, he continues to provide guidance and support to the design team, ensuring that the brand’s design language remains consistent and innovative.

And finally, we have SangYup Lee, who took over as Head of Design in 2016, following Schreyer’s departure. Lee, a Korean national, had previously worked for renowned design houses such as Pininfarina and Bentley before joining Hyundai. His extensive experience in luxury and sports car design has brought a fresh perspective to the brand, helping to elevate its design even further.

Under Lee’s leadership, Hyundai has continued to push the boundaries of design, introducing new concepts and models that have captivated the industry and consumers alike. His vision for the brand’s future design direction is focused on creating emotionally appealing and technologically advanced vehicles that cater to the needs and desires of modern customers.

Together, these three key figures have formed a dynamic and cohesive team that has elevated Hyundai’s design to new heights. Their passion, creativity, and dedication have helped to establish the brand as a leader in the automotive industry, and their influence will continue to shape the future of Hyundai Motor Group for years to come.
