As part of the Angola 2025 Plan outlined by the Angolan government, which aims to increase electrification rates using environmentally friendly energy sources, over one million people in 60 communities across Angola will benefit from electricity provided by the public grid. Continuing the electrification efforts in Angola, an event for the laying of the foundation stone for the Rural Electrification Project in the Moxico Province took place in Luau Municipality on the afternoon of Thursday, November 16. The ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Energy and Water, alongside the Provincial Governor Ernesto Muangala, ambassadors from the Republic of Portugal, Francisco Alegre, and the Federal Republic of Germany, Stefan Traumann, as well as renewable energy ambassadors, the Vice Provincial Governor, and senior officials from the energy sector, DNNER, PRODE, ENDE, and the Project’s Sponsor, the Renowned Musician Matias Damásio.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony and the laying of the first stone to commence construction, a contract was signed between the public company PRODEL, representing the Angolan state as the project owner, and the Portuguese Group MCA, as the main contractor.
Minister João Baptista Borges emphasized on this occasion that the project, once constructed, is part of the priorities outlined by the Head of the Executive Branch, João Lourenço, to ensure access to electricity for thousands of families residing in remote areas of the country, aiming to boost economic and social development in these locations.
Regarding design and development, the engineering project, construction of hybrids, photovoltaic generation with storage system using lithium-ion batteries, and the expansion of the power grid with new distribution networks in a total of 12 locations will enable the country to have cleaner and cheaper energy, expecting to reach about 59,000 households with prepaid connections, benefiting over 370,000 people.
In Luau, it is expected to reach approximately 59,370 beneficiaries of this significant project. Additionally, a photovoltaic park with 55,500 solar panels will be built, with a production capacity of 58MWp.
The Luau Rural Electrification Project is budgeted at over €1,027,587,914.00, with completion expected within three years (36 months) from the date of contract signing between both parties.
At the end of the event, the minister traveled to the municipality of Luena to assess the progress of the implementation of the photovoltaic park in the city center (Luena), which is at a 95% completion rate in terms of physical structure and will have a capacity of 26,906 MWdc.
